It’s never too early to get your toddler into books. They'll love hearing you read and have fun pointing and babbling at the pictures on the pages. What’s more, experts agree that even the youngest children get a head start by having stories read to them. Being read to fires a child’s imagination, and can help them succeed at school by learning to talk, read and write more easily. Books make great entertainment for toddlers and give you the chance to spend some quality time together. Tots will enjoy hearing the sound of your voice as you read to them.Young children love repetition and learn from hearing the same stories and rhymes over and over. Help them along by pointing to and naming the pictures, shapes or colours on each page when you first read a new book. This is a great way to boost their language and memory skills. They’ll get to recognise the pictures and will enjoy pointing them out when they see them again. Older toddlers love repeating what you read to them, holding books and ‘reading’ them themselves.

You could start by reading to your toddler at bedtime, but any time that suits you both is fine. Make it part of your daily routine, something that you can both look forward to. Younger toddlers, especially, don’t have much of an attention span, so you may start with just a few minutes reading each day. But before you know it, they’ll be on their way to a lifetime of loving books!
