Car accidents rife during Britain's school runs

Over a million car accidents occur during the school run period each year, figures show, as it coincides with peak travelling times across the country, the British Insurance Brokers' Association (Biba) has revealed.

Graeme Trudgill, technical and corporate affairs executive for BIBA, explained: "The school run is the peak time; it's when we get the most vehicles on our congested roads.

"The school run incidents are quite often the little bumps that you get in trying to quickly drop off and pick up your little ones."

According to Sainsbury's Finance, 15% of people who drive children to school admit to driving without the appropriate child safety seating, while 13% of drivers blame a fear of being late for erratic driving on the school run.

Also research has found that men are more likely to drive on the school run with a child passenger not properly secured, with 18% admitting to this, compared to 12% of women.

Mr Trudgill added that with 33 million cars on Britain's roads and busy people driving to work and school, it is unsurprising that road jams and accidents occur.
