Children 'avoiding' suncream

24 Jul 2008

Children
Just 5% of children think they need to wear suncream when on holiday abroad, research by Boots has found.

Also, Boots claimed that a third of little ones would rather play indoors over the summer than put sunscreen on, while a similar number have hidden from their parents to avoid wearing cream.

A fifth of children admitted to lying to their mums and dads about wearing sunscreen, while 17% of mums claimed sun protection is the biggest cause of family holiday quarrels.

In response to the study findings, the shop has launched a safety in the sun campaign, Making Suncare Funcare, to encourage children to wear protection outdoors.

As part of the campaign, Same Difference of X-Factor fame have updated the traditional song Heads, Shoulders, Knees and Toes with a new dance routine to show little ones how to properly apply sunscreen. It can be downloaded from the Boots website.

Sarah from Same Difference said that the tune is "catchy", adding: "Ultimately we hope it helps children stay safe in the sun without sacrificing the fun factor."

Research by Insurance.co.uk found that three-fifths of children aged three and under have been on a holiday abroad.
