Children's speech, language needs 'not well understood'

22 Dec 2008

Children
The Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists has called for the government to provide additional support to parents of children with speech, language and communication needs.

In response to recently announced government plans to improve services for children with speech and language problems, CEO Kamini Gadhok said that the "biggest task is to resolve the issue of integrated commissioning and delivering seamless services built around the child, not leaving families to be passed between health and education".

"Speech, language and communication needs are not well understood and parents should not have to fight continuously and repeatedly to get support for their children from health, education and social services," Ms Gadhok explained.

The December 2008 Families in Britain report stated that the wellbeing of a family depends upon the commitment and behaviours of the individuals within it. It maintained that families have to fulfil their responsibilities as the government does not bring up children, parents do.
