Child's lunch linked to academic success

20 Aug 2008

Child
Ensuring your child gets a nutritious lunch everyday at school can boost their performance in the classroom, research suggests.

Studies have shown that nutrition plays a key role in a child's ability to maintain concentration levels and improve brain function.

Rita Stoffaneller, senior nutritionist from Efamol, commented: "Every parent wants their child to achieve the best they can in school, and to help give them the best start possible. Evidence suggests we can begin by looking to the foods they eat."

She explained that food additives found in fizzy drinks, sweets and snacks, can have a detrimental effect on behaviour.

On the other hand, supplementing their diet with omega-3 oils can help give children "the brain boost they need to be on top form this year".

The government recommends that we eat two portions of fish a week, one of which should be oily fish, such as salmon, sardines or fresh tuna.
