Don't let your child's eczema dictate family life

11 Sep 2008

Don
Research conducted on behalf of Oilatum Junior found that 15% of parents with children who suffer from eczema are frustrated that the condition rules their lives.

As National Eczema Week begins this weekend, parenting coach and author Sue Atkins has released some key tips for parents on coping with their child's eczema.

"On a practical note, bathing is very good for eczema. Children with eczema should bath once or even twice a day as this will clean the skin, soothe itching and help prevent infections," she advised.

As soap and bath detergents dry out inflamed skin, bath emollient is important. After bathing, parents should pat skin dry gently with a towel before applying cream to lock in moisture.

Ms Atkins explained that it is virtually impossible to stop a child from scratching. So, keeping finger nails trimmed, encouraging regular hand washing and putting cotton mittens on a sleeping baby are simple ways of minimising irritation or infection.

"It is important to remember that, with the right treatment regime and diet, the eczema will get better and life will improve for you, your child and the whole family," she added.

According to National Eczema Society research, 22% of mums said that seeing their child suffer is the worst thing to deal with.
