Healthy eating habits need to be learned from childhood

Healthy eating habits need to be learned from childhood
Most children do not understand the consequences of eating an unhealthy diet, the British Heart Foundation has highlighted.

Cardiac nurse Ellen Mason explained that it is up to parents to educate themselves and their children about the side effects and implications of eating junk food from an early age.

"It really is about setting a pattern for the rest of our lives," she said. "Many adults don't understand that it links to diabetes, heart disease and the cancers that can come from obesity and children won't either. We need to do something about it."

To support parents on this subject, the British Heart Foundation has launched Yoobot - an online game which allows children to play with their future, helping them understand the long-term effects of a poor diet.

The choices kids make for their Yoobot from the food it eats, to the exercise it does, have a direct impact upon the lifespan and wellbeing of their virtual character.

Figures indicate that two thirds of all children will be overweight or obese by 2050 and today's youngsters may be the first generation to live shorter lives than their parents.
