top 100 girls names 2018

The top 3 names given to girls in the last year remains unchanged as Olivia, Amelia and Isla keep hold of positions 1, 2 and 3. Although new additions in the top 10 this year include the return of old favourites, Ella (up 3 places to position 10) and Grace (up 4 places to position 7).

But another usually popular choice, Lily has fallen out of the top 10 dropping 5 places to position 11.

Highest climbing girls names this year

Breaking into the top 100 girls’ names is the traditional name Ada  which is up a huge 61 places to position 73 as well as unusual name Myla up 39 places to storm into the top 100 at 91. The alternative more popular spelling, Mila is also up 23 places to position 46.

Is there a new trend emerging in girls’ names?

As with boys’ names, where Tommy has seen a huge spike, Peaky Blinders seems to have a big influence on name choices for girls. Tommy Shelby’s sister was called Ada which is the highest climbing girls name this year and his wife’s name, Grace has broken back into the top 10. Brother John’s wife, Esme, also may be the reason for the name moving up a further 5 places to position 32.

Baby girls’ names on the decline

The once trend name, spelt 3 different ways, Darcie/Darcy/ Darcey, are all losing favour down 11, 9 and 11 places respectively to positions 69, 79 and 97. Some traditional girls names are also on the decline including Charlotte down 5 places to position 19, Isabelle  down 7 places to position 31, Maria is down 10 places to position 92 and Hannah down 8 places to position 57.

Whilst the name Ruby once revelled in the glory of being the 4th most popular girl's name 8 years ago, nowadays it is just about holding on in the Top 30 having dropped 8 places this year from 22 to 30.
