Ibruprofen better than paracetamol for childhood fever
04 Sep 2008Fever affects around 70% of pre-school children every year, according to new research published by the British Medical Journal.
A study conducted at the University of Bristol and the University of the West of England found that ibuprofen reduces a child's temperature faster and for longer than paracetamol.
Commenting on the findings, paediatrician, Dr Dipak Kanabar, from Evelina Children's Hospital in London, said: "In children, we recognise that ibuprofen has a very good effect in fever and pain control compared to agents like paracetamol and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, as it controls these symptoms for longer periods of time.
"This study confirms that ibuprofen is the preferred and superior choice for fever management in children."
The normal temperature range for a child, measured in the mouth or from the ear, falls between 36-36.8ºC (97.7-99.1ºF).
Plenty of fluids is very important for a child with fever, with a teaspoon every few minutes recommended to keep them hydrated.
