Mayor launches priority seating initiative for pregnant women
06 Mar 2008The Mayor of London has today (March 6th) unveiled new signs aimed at encouraging passengers on the Tube to offer their seat to pregnant women.
Due to be introduced throughout the London Underground network from March 10th, the new priority seating stickers will ask Tube users to give up their seat for expectant mums and those who are less able to stand.
Mayor Ken Livingston said: "These signs ask all passengers to give pregnant women the respect to which they are entitled by offering them a seat. I am asking all passengers pay attention to their fellow travellers and make sure that pregnant women are offered a seat."
Research from London Underground found that a third of pregnant women who travel by Tube are never offered to sit down, while some can wait for an average of five station stops before being offered a seat.
Louise Silverton, deputy general secretary of the Royal College of Midwives, added: "By encouraging passengers to give up their seats for pregnant women, the campaign will reduce stress and anxiety levels for pregnant women travelling on public transport."
