The credit crunch and spiralling food costs are squeezing family budgets, but there are a number of choices parents can make to ensure their money goes further.

Don't pay over the odds for baby products, advises the Evening Star, an averagely-priced pushchair will do just the job.

When travelling abroad, look which airlines offer discounts or free places for under-twos, the newspaper added, recommending that house swaps can also cut down the expense of a holiday.

For parents who are trying to entertain their little ones, many attractions have two-for-one or family deals, it stated, meaning the whole family can have a great day out at a low cost.

With rising food prices, consumers would do well to ensure they get a credit or loyalty card for their local supermarket, advised the source, as money-off vouchers can cut the cost of shopping.

It was recently recommended by the Daily Mirror that women who are having a baby within a few months of a friend could split the cost of items such as Moses baskets as they will only be used for a short period of time.
