Omega-3 DHA linked to foetal development

Omega-3 DHA linked to foetal development
Dietary consumption of the omega-3 DHA during pregnancy can be linked to enhanced infant development, a new study suggests.

Research findings published in the Journal of Pediatrics reveal that intake of DHA in the last trimester of pregnancy can help boost the baby's sensory, cognitive and motor development.

DHA expert Dr Barbara Levine commented: "For years researchers and nutritional experts have studied the importance of DHA in a pregnant woman's diet and the resulting impact these essential nutrients have on the development of her fetus.

"In addition to folic acid, which helps prevent the development of spinal bifida and other birth defects, it is necessary for expectant mother's to include DHA in their diets for brain and eye development."

A separate survey on children's nutrition claimed that parents should also try to incorporate DHA into their children's diet from birth, as it is particularly important for brain and eye development between birth and the age of five.

Weekly poll

In a speech at the recent Conservative party conference it was proposed that 'all mothers in (NHS) maternity care will have access to a single room'. How do you feel about this idea? (Please select one answer only)
It's a great idea and would get my vote!
It's a good idea, but not a priority
Sharing a postnatal ward is safer if anything were to happen to you or your baby
Money should be spent on more midwives instead
It's unrealistic and would be a waste of money
