Parents urged to help kids be more active

Parents urged to help kids be more active
A majority of British children need help to get more involved in sports activities, according to Olympic gold medal winner Sally Gunnell.

"They need that guidance. There is probably only a small amount that would go out of the way themselves and demand to go somewhere. As parents we've got big roles to support them," she maintained.

According to the latest figures from the NHS, in 2006, boys were more likely than girls to meet the recommended levels of physical activity with 70 per cent of boys and 59 per cent of girls reportedly taking part in 60 minutes or more of physical activity on all seven days in the previous week.

Sally added: "We talk about how many kids are over-weight, the obesity problems. A lot of it is down to not exercising enough."

The Norwich Union Community Sports Fund allows the public to vote for the local sporting initiative of their choice.

Local projects could be in with a chance of claiming part of a £500,000 grant, which will be distributed between more than 200 sporting initiatives nationwide.
