Prince Edward, Sophie welcome first son

18 Dec 2007

Prince Edward, Sophie welcome first son
Buckingham Palace has announced that Sophie Countess of Wessex and Prince Edward have welcomed a son.

The 42-year-old countess gave birth to her second child, a baby boy, by caesarean section at a hospital in Surrey on Monday afternoon.

Now eighth in line to the throne, the baby will join four-year-old sister Lady Louise Windsor.

A spokesperson for the happy couple said that both Sophie and Edward were "thrilled, absolutely thrilled" by the new addition to their family.

The Earl of Wessex, who married Sophie Rhys-Jones in June 1999, said: "He looks like most babies - rather small, very cute and very cuddly.

"You have to get to know the small person coming into the world before you pick a name, so we'll wait a few days for that."

The baby is the Queen's eighth grandchild and first male heir to be born since Prince Harry.

In a speech at the recent Conservative party conference it was proposed that 'all mothers in (NHS) maternity care will have access to a single room'. How do you feel about this idea? (Please select one answer only)
It's a great idea and would get my vote!
It's a good idea, but not a priority
Sharing a postnatal ward is safer if anything were to happen to you or your baby
Money should be spent on more midwives instead
It's unrealistic and would be a waste of money
