'Safety features not included' on holidays

11 Jun 2008

A quarter of parents with young children have been on family holidays where no basic safety equipment or features were provided, it has been revealed.

According to travel firm Tots to Travel, 45.8% of mums and dads said they feel they must be more safety conscious with their little ones on holiday than they would be at home.

It found that only 45.7% of swimming pools were enclosed, 28.7% had stairgates and 16.1% had covers for the electric plug sockets.

As part of Child Safety Week, which runs from June 23rd to the 29th, Tots to Travel founder Wendy Shand is encouraging parents to be extra wary while on holiday.

"Most holiday properties are not designed with young children in mind," she said. "Parents go to great lengths to make their homes child-proof but the same precautions aren't usually in place on a holiday."

The firm recommended that parents call their holiday firm ahead and find out which safety features their room will have so that they can hire any that are not included, such as a playpen or stairgate.

Research by Holiday-Rentals.co.uk found that journeying and packing are the most stressful aspects of summer breaks for mums.

Weekly poll

In a speech at the recent Conservative party conference it was proposed that 'all mothers in (NHS) maternity care will have access to a single room'. How do you feel about this idea? (Please select one answer only)
It's a great idea and would get my vote!
It's a good idea, but not a priority
Sharing a postnatal ward is safer if anything were to happen to you or your baby
Money should be spent on more midwives instead
It's unrealistic and would be a waste of money
