Sun cream 'important' for children going to school

Parents are being warned to protect their children from the sun this summer following a new report.

According to the British Association of Dermatologists, the UK has the highest skin cancer rates for children aged between zero and 14.

However, a previous study by the organisation revealed that a quarter of parents do not apply sun cream to their offspring before they go to school in the summer.

Over a third (37 per cent) buy sunscreens lower than SPF30 - the recommended factor - for their children, it also found.

Commenting on the figures, the organisation's Nina Goad said the level of skin cancer among UK children is "frightening".

"Sunburn as a child can as much as double the chances of skin cancer later in life," she warned. "So kids need to be protected with sunscreen, clothing and shade when spending time outdoors on sunny days."

Cancer Research UK recently highlighted the need for both adults and children to cover up and wear sun cream while on holiday in hotter climes this year.
