Women advised to listen to their bodies during pregnancy
07 May 2008Pregnant women are being asked to listen to their bodies and rest during pregnancy in order to ensure a smooth birth.
Mary Murry, a member of the American College of Nurse-Midwives, is urging pregnant women to ignore the pressures of modern living to find time to relax.
Women in the first months of pregnancy are usually tired and in the latter months complain of aching bodies and it is the modern way of life that stops them taking better care of themselves, she suggests.
Ms Murry told the Mayo Clinic: "With all this rushing and working and controlling our house of cards, we forget to listen to our bodies. This is important during our entire lives but especially during pregnancy."
With over 20 year's experience, Ms Murry advises pregnant women to take a break from their routine either at work or at home to recharge their batteries.
"Don't make your body yell at you. Listen to its quiet voice. Rest when it says to rest. Eat when it says to eat. Pay attention to your cravings. Many women don't think they have the time to take 30 minutes to lie on the couch, but you do," she adds.
