What does your name say about you? Does it make you attractive to others? Some academics think so.
Brilliant Baby Names describes a US study, in which researchers set up a website and asked visitors to rate the attractiveness of 24 young people. They then changed the names underneath the pictures and waited for a new order to emerge.
Amazingly, when they compared the results they found that a names makes an average six per cent difference in terms of attractiveness to the opposite sex. And this wasn’t just a one-off – when UK researchers repeated the study, they also found a six per cent difference.
So what makes a name attractive?
• For men, the shorter the name, the more appealing it sounds. Therefore, names such as Matt and John are always popular with girls.
• For women, the opposite holds true. The longer and more flowing the name, the more appealing she becomes.
