Delicious homemade baby food can be created by pureeing just about any kind of vegetable. You’ll know exactly what your baby is getting and will save money too.
The perfect puree:
- To make first foods, peel, scrub or prepare the fruit or vegetables and cut into pieces.
- Do not add salt.
- Try not to add sugar; only use the smallest amount to make sour fruits more acceptable.
- Cook by covering with a little water and simmering gently until soft; you can also steam or microwave.
- When cooked, add a little of the cooking water (as this will contain dissolved vitamins from the fruit or Vegetables) or your baby’s usual milk.
- Push the soft, cooked foods through a sieve using the back of a metal spoon to remove any pips or Tough fibres.
- You can adjust the texture by adding more water or milk until you find a consistency your baby likes.

supermarket baby food
the reason some babies like ready made baby food from jars is because they are full of sugar so when you try and give them something you have made yourself they tend to reject it as its not sweet enough. my healthvisitor said that there is about 3 spoons of sugar in a jar of baby food!! i've always given my boys homemade mashed (not pureed) food and they loved it.
weaning
Luckily my little boy who is 6 months has eaten everything we have given him. He has had liver and sausage which he loved! fish pie, chicken with tomato and courgette is a good one. I also add herbs and spices to everything as he wont eat bland food. He,s having beef curry tonight! I just give him what we have, pick a little out and blast it in the blender, so hopefully he wont be a fussy eater.
We are feeling very lucky
We are feeling very lucky because our son ,6 months now, might pull faces when he is trying new food or textures but after two spoons he is always asking for more. But agree, ready made baby food seems to attract him more
My baby not liking the home-made puree
I am making the purees at home. I tried carrot, boiled potatos, apple..but my 6 mnth old baby is not liking it. When I got the purees from the market he is easily having it. Can anyone understand why this would be happening?
'How to make the perfect puree'
As a Health Visitor I was shocked to read 'try not to add sugar'. I have just started weaning my daughter so I am now experiecing this for myself, but my professional side could not ignore this comment.
Babies do not know what food tastes like and adding sugar (whilst may get a baby to eat a food quicker) will be harmful in the long-term. The health advice is not to add salt or sugar to food. As parents we need to be advised and thus understand that babies may require a new taste several times before they accept it. These parenting websites are helpful but I also feel can be quite unrealistic and can make you feel like a failure very easily.
Try adding potato to strong
Try adding potato to strong tasting purees like pea, spinach and parsnip as they can be quite bitter on there own :)
Sweet potato heaven
My bubba loves sweet potato puree and butternut squash puree, not keen on peas and spinach...however it was bright green. I find adding porridge to fruits she finds too tart are a great way of getting fruit in diet...usually at breakfast.
weaningq
I am starting to wean my dd. Has anyone used swede as first tastes?
I feed my 6 month old all the
I feed my 6 month old all the fruits and vegetables available in shops, but I only ever steam the vegetables. I have never steamed the fruit - I simply use a hand blender and fresh puree's every meal time. Is not steaming ok? It seems that everyone steams everything!
