Most babies love to feed themselves, and being independent about eating will encourage your baby to try lots of new tastes and textures.
Also, chasing foods round a highchair tray is good practice for hand and eye co-ordination skills!
Try these when your baby is used to a range of foods and can cope with a few lumps:
- Rusks
- Toast soldiers
- Coarsely grated cheese
- Strips of banana
- Slices of apple or pear
- Cooked vegetables strips
- Grated raw carrot and apple.
The Department of Health recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months. Unless otherwise advised by your health professional, solid foods in any form (baby jars, cereals or rusks) should not be started any earlier than six months.

Rusks
Is it right to put Rusks top of the list for finger food? All the health visitors say Rusks are no good for babies teeth and are 20% sugar so unhealthy too.

Weaning
My daughter has just turned 7 months and has 3 meals a day and 2-3 bottles of milk. Mostly a bottle with her breafast and a bottle with her dinner. She takes her lunch with a yogurt and water afterwards. A part from her breakfast (porridge, sumer fruit veg. etc of Heinz) I always cook for her and she enjoys a mixture of puree (beef, chicken, fish) mixted with vegetables, rice or potatoes. I have never given her jars' food. She has not teeth yet and I wonder if I can give her finger foof. Please advise.
Thanks.
I would suggest that you
I would suggest that you don't worry, most babies will manage to work out finger foods when they are ready. I was very cautious with my first - did not do baby led weaning, however, she managed to do finger foods when she wanted and was feeding her self very well with a spoon etc by about 1year. My son - 8 -9 months now has been grabbing everything and is good at feeding himself - I don't do strictly baby led or not - they tend to eat what I eat chopped and mashed and that seems to work well, with pieces of fruit etc and sandwiches as finger food.
finger foods at 10 months
My ds will not try finger foods. i have tried him with many different things but he just throws it away. Its like he doesnt like the feeling on his hands. Any suggestions anyone as i am desperate?
baby led weening
Being a young mother I was a bit nervous when it came to weening, I was very precautious about what I gave my little girl to eat and just stuck to the cow and gate jars and baby porridge. I started weaning at 6months, she's now 9 months and iv relaxed with the whole thing completly. She's eating 3 meals a day, and snacks all day with differnt things such as fruit, sugar free rusks and veg sticks. I still stick to jars mainly but she does eat some things the same as me such as homemade soups, mashed up pasta with sauces, chicken dinners mashed and so on. Iv also recently started letting her have the odd milky bar and potato wedges! She's still on 3-4 bottles of 6oz follow on milk a day and finding it hard to wean her down to just one in the morning and one in the evening before bed. She still wakes up at 5 for a bottle but sleeps right from 7 till 5 without waking so any tips would be great :)
prettylucky has said pretty
prettylucky has said pretty much what i was going to say ! i baby led weaned my first who is now 2 years old and there isn't anything that she doesn't eat and i absolutely loved watching her eat and still do ! i started weaning my son now 7 months at 6 months old as per the guidelines and decided that as he was not sleeping at all that i would try pureeing food instead of baby led weaning to make sure i knew how much he was having then i could attempt to get him to do a bit longer between milk feeds overnight...i lasted a week and was so fed up of pureeing copious amounts of veg that he is now doing baby led weaning and is having great fun putting anything and everything in his mouth....his gag reflex is working just right and the baby led weaning book says that anything they put in their own mouths they wont choke on. I would strongly recommend reading the book its great and has made mealtimes a much more social and enjoyable occasion :-)

My little girl is 9mths old and will eat anything lumps and all but when she feeds herself she tends to bite too much or thinks she dsnt have to chew, she has a bottle with her breakfast and one at bedtime xxx
My son is nearly 30 weeks and
My son is nearly 30 weeks and we followed the baby-led weaning principle. He held things like strips of pepper and broccoli from before 6 months as he would "chew" watching us eat and reach for food on our plates. From the first smooth food he ate (at 26 weeks) he grabbed the spoon as soon as I'd loaded it and got it in his mouth! (Obviously, he wasn't always so successful.) He now eats 3 meals a day well and I just love to watch his independence grow. We'd never heard of BLW when I had my first son (now 8) and I don't think I gave him finger foods for a long while as I didn't want him to choke. I was also nervous about mess with any feeding - once you realise there will be mess on occasions it all feels less stressful. When you read BLW it just makes sense that most babies (I accept that there are those with digestive problems or disabilities that this may not be suitable for) should start off with normal food when weaning. It was only because when the advice was to wean very early, babies wouldn't have the dexterity or coordination to help themselves to food. Trust your babies to help themselves. The best things about discovering BLW are: I don't have to cook separate meals, I already get to eat my dinner while it's still hot as baby can help himself and seeing the progress in dexterity daily (e.g. pincer grip to pick up raspberries, different grips for slippery food). I know I sound smug, that's cause I am! You probably will be too if you try it! The drawbacks for me are: I have high cholesterol and now cook with whole milk, cheese, etc and being gripped by the fear of choking for the first month ("nobody distract him, he's got food in his mouth!") - the gag reflex has done it's job as expected and explained in the BLW book. If you haven't read up on it yet, get a copy and see what you think. I've never read anything about it not working and lots about how liberating it is. Good luck!
My son also prefers the jars.
My son also prefers the jars. I cook him only chicken with veg which is ticker than the ready meals. At the begining he didn't like it but with the time he started eating more and more. Just needs time and don't stop offering him!
