What is your baby doing?
- Making the transition from milk to solids
- Sitting upright without your help
- Possibly crawling or at least attempting to move
- Sleeping longer at night and less during the day
- Babbling all the time
What not to worry about – crawling
Some babies choose to commando crawl across the room on their arms, others roll about, and some bum shuffle. Whatever method your baby chooses to take is normal, so don’t worry. However, the more tummy time your baby has, the stronger his arms and legs will be and the quicker he/she will start to move. Though all babies are different and while some babies will take off at six months, others won’t move until 10 months and some will skip crawling all together.
How you can help your child at this age?
- Encourage your baby to crawl by placing yourself out of arms reach and asking your baby come to you.
- Read to your child. Your baby may not have the patience to listen but research shows the earlier you start reading, the bigger your child’s eventual appreciation will be.
- Choose brightly coloured picture books with flaps and textured pictures to draw in your baby’s attentionBuy some stacking blocks. Developing hand-to-eye coordination is one of the biggest challenges for your baby, so stacking cups/blocks are great way for your baby to learn.
Troubleshooting - “My six month old won’t eat solids.”
“The trick is to persevere but not let it upset you. My eldest daughter took to solids right away, but my youngest refused until she was nearly 8 months. I did everything I could. I mixed breast milk with baby cereal, made fruit purees and even reduced her milk intake so she’d be hungry, but nothing worked. Then one morning at the park her sister gave her a rice cake and a banana and she just started eating. I guess she was ready.” Sam, 35 mum to Millie 5 and Rosie, 2
