The secret to low-maintenance hair

Being a mum can play havoc with your hair. After cooking, cleaning, chasing a rowdy toddler and trying to hit that deadline, that trip to the hairdresser will just have to wait - again.

Let’s be honest, sometimes even washing your hair can feel like a major achievement, but just because you can’t spend hours grooming, doesn’t mean you can’t hold your head high with a funky new look.

Follow our guidelines to create and maintain an easy hairdo that oozes style.

  • Make the cut - Splashing out on an expensive haircut might not be top of your agenda when you’ve got children to think about, but the long term benefits of a first-rate cut are vast. Your hair is likely to stay in shape for longer and you won’t need another cut for months.
  • Keep it simple - “Think about your lifestyle,” says celebrity hairdresser Richard Ward, whose clients include Liz Hurley, Kim Catrall and Lisa Snowden. “How high-maintenance can you go? Work out if you have time to ‘do’ your hair every day – if not, opt for something low maintenance. “Less is more,” he continues. “Try to stick to the golden rule – one styling product is all you should use.”
  • Layer it – A mid-length layered cut with a side or centre parting will suit most face shapes. Medium length hair is effortlessly chic and won’t get in the way of your everyday activities. And layers provide the added effect of looking like your hair has been styled even when it hasn’t.
  • Stay natural - If you’re head over heels in love with your baby, go au naturel, advises Beckie Goodall from Keith Hall Hairdressing. “You’re far to busy to think about styling your hair, but that’s no reason to let yourself go! Use Sebastian Professional Evokativ Lustful to lock in volume – it smells like whipped cream so your hair will look and smell delicious!”
  • Quick cheat - If you don’t have much time, just shampoo and blow dry the fringe/front and sides, says Ward, as it’s these areas that look the most bedraggled if not freshly washed. “Any length hair will look revitalised with this quick trick, and best of all you will feel fresh, and more groomed too,” he says.
  • Chop it all off! “Who said a crop can’t be girlie?” says stylist Zoe Langton from Keith Hall. “The key to this style is to keep the top a bit longer so you still have enough hair to style. High maintenance it isn’t – just run some High Hair Punk Chic from Wella Professional through your strands for light control.
  • Don’t be rash “Don’t commit to a drastic colour change unless you’re 100% sure,” says Clairol creative director Sean Tetlow. “Clairol’s nice ‘n easy non-permanents (£4.99) are perfect if colouring your hair makes you feel nervous or you are trying a new colour for the first time. They give fabulous glossy, naturally coloured hair with the flexibility to change whenever you like.”
