You are what you eat

You already know that eating well during pregnancy is vital for you and your baby’s wellbeing. But when it comes to looking good you really are what you eat, so don’t forget:

Essential fatty acids

“Eating well is crucial, because the baby will initially take a lot of your essential fatty acids, says pregnancy nutrition adviser Vicky Warr. “They are not called essential for nothing – you need them,” she continues, “They are great for your hair and skin health – kind of an internal moisturiser which will help your skin glow.” Excellent sources are:

  • Pumpkin or sesame seeds
  • Nuts – particularly hazelnuts or macadamias – but avoid eating nuts if there is a family history of allergy, or if allergy status is unknown.
  • Oily fish is good too, but should be limited to no more than two portions a week. “Go for wild salmon if you have the budget, and always make sure it’s cooked well,” Warr advises.

Five a day

Five portions of fruit and vegetables a day for bags of vitamins and minerals.

Iron

Help combat tiredness by making sure you get enough iron in your diet. Good sources are lean meat, breakfast cereals, sardines, leafy green vegetables and dried fruits. And Vitamin C, which helps you absorb iron from foods.

Fibre

Wholegrain bread and brown pasta or rice will give you energy and fibre, which helps prevent constipation, one of the “great hidden secrets of pregnancy,” according to Dr Sarah Jarvis, spokeswoman for the Fibre Foundation. “Constipation can leave us feeling bloated and lacking in energy and can increase the risk of fluid retention. A high fibre diet also reduces the risk of excess weight gain, and can make the prospect of shifting those post-baby pounds less daunting,” she adds.

Water

Drink plenty of it– it’s as true during pregnancy as any other time. The tried-and-tested eight glasses a day will flush out your system and give any blemishes a run for their money.

The Big Issue

Don’t worry about your weight! Some women dread becoming ‘fat’ during pregnancy, but whatever you do, don’t diet! Putting on weight is a positive sign – your body’s doing what it’s supposed to, so enjoy it, and make the most of your new shape.

Iam 11 weeks and i wake up each day with a flat tummy .... by the end of the day os so swollen i look around 6 months ... doest anyone else have this ?? xxx
I wouldn't worry about it. If you had bad morning sickness you may have lost weight at the beginning of your pregnancy hence the fact it doesn't look like you have put on much weight on the scales. Everyone's bodies are different and will change in different ways. I have put on two pounds but seem to have slimmed down in other places. If you are still worried contact your midwife - that's what they're there for!! Good luck :)
I'm 27 weeks pregnant and have only put on a 1lb, should I be worried?
i'm 32 weeks pregnant and have only put 7pounds on... is this healthy?
Try taking the iron in the mornings or with your lunchtime meal. You can also try taking a glass of milk to kill the heartburn about an hour after you take the iron. That neutralises the acid. Otherwise Gaviscon or Rennies can help. Zantac is also available over the counter (Ranitidine) and is safe to use in Pregnancy. Hope that helps?
i'm 33 weeks pregnant and i have to drink iron cause i don't have enough apparantly... but that kills me because after i take a tablet just before i go to bed it gives me a horrible heartburn... any advise ladies? xx
Dear Lyndsey - do you take gaviscon liquid? The liquid works quicker than the tablets i found... also fizzy water - it does help settle the stomach. Also eat slowly and little and often. I hope that helps a little? if not go to your doctors, maybe they can prescribe something a little stronger and still safe for baby x
I'm ten weeks pregnant today, and have been suffering from all day sickness since around the 6 week mark! It has been a real pain as I had to tell my work pretty quickly as wasn't able to continue working with the sickness, vertigo and exhaustion (aslo due to the fact I couldn't eat so meant 0 energy), but I went to the doctors and she gave me an "anti-sick" tablet to take around 15 mins before I want to eat. It really works, i still can't work as not eating "enough" but I am getting my tastebuds back and am able to tempt myself to eat a little more varied and healthier than toast and tuc crackers! I was a really healthy eater before the pregnancy so not be able to eat my 5 a day is frustrating, but whatever you can eat is good, and eat what you can and what you fancy, plus take your prenatel vitamins!! If you suffer from nausea i definately recommend seeing your doctor, you can have medicines which won't harm the baby. Also some people really don't get nausea at all in the first trimester - my mum had none what-so-ever when she had me! My friend even had sickness pretty much the whole way through her pregnancy - everyone is different so listen to your body and what it is telling you - there is no right or wrong, and if you have to stop working don't panic - your baby is the most important thing!
I'm 22 weeks and have been doing the same eating chocolate and junk which I didn't have that often pre pregnancy! I try to still have by 5 a day and drink lots of water.
Since i found out i was becoming a mum i have noticed myself eating alot of junk food. Things like chocolates, crisps, McDonalds etc. Im starting to eat a bit better like proper cooked meals and fruit and vegetables :) lets hope my baby comes out healthy because mummy isnt doing to well!!!
