Birthmarks can develop either before or shortly after birth, and can range from the prominent to the barely-visible. Many parents are concerned when they see a birthmark on their baby, but there are lots of different types and not all need treatment.
The main types are:
Brown marks
Sometimes dark, sometimes pale, about one in ten babies has a mark like this. They may not fade, but are harmless and need no treatment.
Mongolian blue spots
Blue-black areas called Mongolian blue spots –appear over the base of the spine, are common in dark-skinned babies and fade slowly over the first few years.
Stork bites
Small, flat pinkish areas ‘stork bites’ – on the eyelids and at the nape of the neck; these will disappear in a few weeks.
Strawberry birth marks
These are bright red marks with clear edges which may get bigger over the first six months then gradually decrease in size, usually disappearing by six years. They only need treatment if near your baby’s eyes, or where they might cause discomfort.
Port wine stains
These deep purple marks are often on the face and are permanent. While they’re usually harmless, they can be upsetting. Modern techniques in laser therapy can have excellent cosmetic results.
