The Tax Incentivised Savings Association (TISA) hasissued recommendations for mums-to-be in a bid to make family financial management easier.
As new parents, Brits are often faced with a difficult balancing act of separating cash for immediate priorities and money to save for the future.
To ease financial pressures, particularly in the current economic climate, parents-to-be have been encouraged to claim the Health in Pregnancy Grant worth £190, as well as set up a Child Trust Fund when their child is born.
Tony Vine-Lott, TISA director general, said: "The financial 'squeeze' is making life difficult for many families. The Pregnancy Grant is a one-off payment that will help mothers at an expensive time, but it is also important to look ahead too.
"Increasingly parents are committing to save for their children's futures using a Child Trust Fund."
He called for more grandparents, aunts, uncles and family friends to help young families by making regular contributions into the funds.
The Health in Pregnancy Grant is available to expectant mums due to give birth on or after 6 April 2009.
