You know that a healthy diet is vital for your child’s energy and concentration, and helps them focus better on lessons, but how can you be sure they will eat well during the school day?
We weigh up the pros and cons of school dinners and packed lunches.
The packed lunch
For some mums, a well-balanced lunchbox is the only option. Reasons include:
- You know your child is getting something they like and will not go hungry during the day.
- School dinners are high in salt and fat and don’t include enough vegetables.
- Packed lunches are cheaper and provide more variety
The school dinner
School dinners have come a long way, according to the School Food Trust, which is campaigning to get more parents to sign up. It says:
- School meals are more likely to contain fruit, vegetables and healthier drinks, compared with packed lunches.
- Many schools are reducing the salt they use in cooking, and using great herbs and spices instead.
- 72% of children taking school lunch select vegetables, versus only 6% who take a packed lunch.
