Plane trip survival tips

travelling with children

Gate check the buggy

Keep buggies with you as long as possible if you have a small baby or if your toddler doesn’t like to walk when flying with children. If that means buying a cheap folding umbrella stroller you can board the plane with – you’ll be glad you did. There’s a lot of walking to the flight gate and even when toddlers can sit down they rarely stay still, so little legs will get tired and you will get whingeing.

Board first or last

If you do not have allocated seats, board as soon as you can to get the spot near the loo/window/aisle wherever you want to be. Paying extra for early boarding sounds like a great idea but in reality it means an extra 30 minutes with fidgety kids in those cramped seats when the air conditioner has not been turned on yet and there’s no access to the loo. Allocated seats are better value, that way you can just wait until the final boarding call and get on within minutes of take-off.

Spare top

One for you and one for your kids – in case of airsickness, nappy leaks, dribble or plain old spillage. You might not get access to your luggage for hours and no one likes to smell of wee or vomit for long. Plus patterned tops are more forgiving than plain, dark tops - new mums will understand why! We’re not expecting ourselves to emerge from the plane looking like Cheryl Cole but we can at least disguise food and poo stains!

Teach them to equalise

During take-off and descent help prevent them getting ear pain by encouraging them to keep swallowing, chewing or sucking a sugar-free lollipop. For a baby, you should try feeding them at these times. Even if you’re not keen on a sixth trip to the loo, don’t deprive them of drinks; it’s easy to dehydrate even during a short flight.

Ditch the nappy changing bag

There’s no room for them in a airplane loo and they have a tendency to slip down and whack fellow passengers as you whoosh down the aisle. Use a backpack instead and be sure it’s small enough to stash it under the seat in front of you not the overhead lockers. If you don’t use nappy bags at home, flying is the time to make an exception – many airplanes don’t dispose of dirty nappies.

Dirty looks from grouchy passengers

On every flight, there are some people who, no matter how well your children do, will be grumpy. They'll grumble under their breath when your child drops something or turn around and sneer when they get excited. Ignore them; you'll never see them again after the flight, so be proud of your kids, they have as much of a right to be there as anyone.

Enjoy it

Yeah right… No, seriously. Flying with kids is hard work but it can be a satisfying experience. How often do you get the chance to spend a few uninterrupted hours with them? Have a snuggle and make up a story about clouds with your toddler or look at flight maps with your older ones. If there are two parents, consider taking it in turns to sit with the kids while the other one takes a seat at a distance to get some rest.

I would like to add a comment to this page on behalf of my daughter. I got married in Mexico in Dec, my dgt was chief b/maid, her husband a witness, my two young g/dgts b/maids. My daughter had dropped the bombshell she was preggers and the new baby would only be 5wks old when we travelled. We were like alot of young mums on this site worried about taking a young baby abroard with no vacinations. As it turned out, she was breast feeding so the baby was not at risk from food, we took Milton tablets and a empty big sweetener jar to use as a sterilizer and a big tub of baby milk, also a uv tent for when we were on the beach...invaluable, a couple of muslins to use to protect the new borns head and last but not least 2 MOSSIE NETS to go over the pushchair/cot. The 18mth old also was too young for all the vacs, so we took a few dried food pkt but as long as you peel all friut and checked the temp and made sure the food is properly cooked all was ok. The flight was 10hrs, she fed the 5wk old on take off and landing, and had dummies for both to suck on just in case. They were fine. Also to add extra strain she had a c-sec, her doc checked her at 5wks, 2 days before we went, she was fine and the hol helped her to relax, more than she would of at home. We did worry before hand as it was so hard to get any positive advice about travelling with a tiny newborn, but we need not of done so as it was a fatastic hol, the 3 g/dgts were all brilliant and got beautiful tans. my dgt was completly rested. The wedding was a dream. As a after note we then discovered a baby younger than ours on the plane. I really do hope this manuscript helps someone.

I'm due in May and going on a family holiday in July to Turkey, my little girl will only be 2 months old. I'm worried about how she will cope on a long plane journey.
after travelling abroad several times with our little one ( longest was Florida for her 1st birthday) i highley recommend filling up with food at the airport as ,most airlines dont serve meals under 2 years but but at that age finger foods, cheese + raisins etc she could manage well so stock up. Also we wrapped several little presents up for her to open every couple of hours etc soft shape sorter, a little plastice tea set. Nothing expensive or to big but this kept her well amused for a few hours inbetween naps and feeding. Although she couldnt walk alone she loved walking holding onto us so we 'walked her up & down the aisles'! Most Babies are great on planes so dont be put off just be well organized!
I am due in a weeks time and my brother, who recently proposed to his Brazilian girlfriend has suddenly decided that they are getting married out there in January! My immediate reaction, and feeling is that we can't go. Baby will be 2 months old at the most and the flight is over 11 hrs, and I presume baby won't have had injections, not to mention how we'll feel in the big unknown world of parenthood. I don't want to make my first bad parent decision but it didn't occur to my brother that this would be an issue, he assumed as I won't be pregnant then it would be fine, so is quite upset at the thought we might not make it. Anyone got any solid advice or recommendations on travelling longhaul with a very young baby?
Will be travelling to South Africa with my four month old baby, our journey is in two days time. many thanks for all the tips.Hope me and my baby will enjoy our journey.
I flew to the states on my own with my three month old to visit my inlaws. We did book a basinet but she did not sleep for much of the journey but she has slept through ever since. I did combination and breastfeed and bottle feed on the journey so I could feed her if required when going through customs etc. The worst part of the journey was getting help with my luggage. Enjoy your trips! Much easier with a baby than a toddler.
Hi, I'm currently 12 weeks pregnant and our family have a holiday booked for next summer when the baby will be 5months. It is to Mexico so a long flight and hence a long way from home. I am very worried and not sure it is the best idea to go through with the trip, any advice? Anyone been to Mexico with a young baby? Thanks.
Hey there, I am due the beginning of January and me and my partner are thinking of going abroad next year. When is the ideal time to take your baby on holiday?

hi we are all going a way this year on plane i have 2 boys and twin girls 9 months(prem) . has anyone breastfeed on plane. thankyou .
i travelled to south africa with our then 7 month and the flight was about 14 hours long!! we thought it would be sooo difficult and were worried (it wasnt a choice to go sa we had to) but it was actually not bad! we just stayed relaxed, fed him plenty of water when taking off and played with his toys, let him watch the tv and when he wanted to sleep we had an extra seat fro him and so pulled up the arm rests between my seat, my husbands and LOs so he had room to lye down and seat. we didnt pay for the extra seat, but most flights will have spare seats and if u ask, they will let u sit in them. making the flight more comfortable for all of us. maybe we were lucky with the flight im not sure, we are going to be doing it again when our LO is 18 months old and hopefully will be as smooth as the last time! but honestly its not too bad as long as u just relax and ur baby will pick up on it! we took sma milk cartons on, but couldnt open it! needed scissors lol but the staff sorted it
My little girl is 16 months old and we have travelled abroad 3 times. In answer to some of the questions - you can take baby milk & food on the plane, you have to declare it at security and they may ask you to randomly taste any of it. I always take enough for the day just in case we are delayed and then at least I know we are ok for 24 hours. My little one will still use a dummy so I make sure she has it on take off and landing so the sucking action helps with the air pressure in her ears. Alternatively you could try and time a bottle feed for then. Coope - your car seat will not fit in the cabin ( I had one too). However if you take it as part of the pram it will go in the hold FOC, otherwise you have to pay an extra luggage charge for it. There are a couple of seats that will fit in the cabin - see the Kiddicare website. However you then have to book a seat for the baby too at full cost. Amusing a 9 month old - books, I also bought a small etch a sketch type product so I could draw & tell stories & so could she. If you have an iphone there are some fantastic apps. Good luck, took me a long time to find out all the information I needed, the only issue I have now is that I am unhappy with the quality of baby car seats in hire cars - anyone got any tips for travelling to Faro?
my baby will ten months old when we fly will i need ear plugs for her and can i take ready made sma carton milk on the flight
My little girl is only 12 weeks and I'm flying internally up to my parents for Christmas (daddy will be working :-( ) does anyone know if a car seat has to be put in the hold or can it go into the cabin? It's a maxi cosi cabriofix.
I just want to know how old a baby must be before he can fly?
Me and my boyfriend are taking our wee girl to meet his brothers n sister in Australia. She will be 9 months old then any good tips of how to keep her amused?
