Pros and cons of working from home

Flexible hours, no stressful commute, valuable time with your little one, no-one to answer to - sound good? Then of course there's the lack of boundaries between work and home, childcare dilemmas and struggling to meet a deadline as you fight your way through the household chores... here are the pros and cons of working from home.

The Pros

  • More money for your family. Even making an extra 100 pounds a month can help towards bills, holidays, days out and family expenses.
  • Flexible working hours.
  • More time with your children.
  • You'll feel as if you are contributing to the household. This is a powerful pro if you're a stay-at-home mum who's been feeling low about not earning or have a partner who's been feeling the financial pressure
  • Making money can remind you that there is more to you than being a mum.

The Cons

  • You often have to spend money before making it. Certain ventures will require you to pay out before making money and this can make you feel as if you've taken one step forward only to take three back.
  • Your venture may take over your home or at least change your home life (especially if it's your home that's making you money).
  • There's no escape from the office - you're always there.
  • Lack of social interaction or feeling housebound.
  • You may have to pay tax. Everyone can earn a certain amount each year without paying any income tax (this is called your personal allowance). In 2008-2009 the personal allowance is £6,035 anything above this has to be declared. Be careful if you're on maternity leave as your maternity benefit counts as income and needs to be added to the total you make at home.

Why not explore the options for childfree time to work quietly without distraction? For example, you could dedicate a room as an office or consider a garden office - try www.henleyoffices.com
