Parents are planning to shell out £122 on buying back to school items, such as uniforms, stationary, sportswear and coats, for their children as the new school year begins, according to a survey.
The poll, by life insurer LV, showed that parents of children at primary school plan to fork out an average of £96, while back to school expenses reach £139 for parents who have kids at secondary school.
A school uniform will cost parents £50 on an average. They will have to spend another £40 on sports kit and £20 on both a winter coat and school books.
On an average, parents will fork out £12 on a school bag, £10 on stationary, £6 on a packed lunch box and £10 on a haircut for their child.
Around half of parents intend to spend more on back-to-school items this year compared with a year ago, while 54% are planning to cut their expenses by using low-cost suppliers, such as supermarkets.
A quarter of parents are thinking of buying second-hand clothes for their children from charity shops or eBay.
Nearly half of parents admitted that the back to school costs are affecting their household budget.
