Essentials to feature 'real women'

Friday 03 September 2010

Essentials, a UK glossy magazine, has announced that it is all set to become the first of its kind to feature "real women" on its cover instead of models and celebrities.

Its October issue will feature 10 ordinary women on the front, and the entire magazine will be model, celebrity and airbrush-free.

The monthly magazine will only use ordinary women as cover stars from then onwards, it said, adding that the decision to shun models and celebrities follows requests from readers.

Editor Jules Barton-Breck said: "So many of these women look, and are, amazing that we wanted to celebrate them.

"In our recent reader survey, 70% told us that they would rather see a real woman on the cover of a magazine than a celebrity, so we're excited to be the first magazine in the UK to do this every month."

Essentials claimed to have received hundreds of applications from women for a place on the cover.

As part of the publicity campaign for the October issue, magazines such as Marie Claire, Ideal Home and Woman will carry advertisements, while a series of ads will also be published online.
