The Government should step in to curb the activities of unscrupulous companies exploiting hard-pressed families with "predatory" pricing during the recession, Ed Miliband has said.
The Labour Party leader condemned Britain's "rip-off" culture and called for the creation of a new consumer watchdog to give immediate attention to key areas.
He wants to limit pension fees, car parking charges, airline levies, bank charges, consumer helpline costs and energy bills.
He said there was rising concern that families are being exploited by irresponsible companies in these areas at a time when they are struggling to cope with rising prices and austerity measures.
Mr Miliband said consumer regulation is tougher in the United States and his proposed crackdown would ultimately help businesses to become more competitive.
"People's living standards are squeezed as never before and we have to do everything we can to relieve that burden," he added.
