London cabbie helps deliver baby

Monday 06 September 2010

A London taxi driver saw himself playing the midwife when a woman gave birth to a baby boy in the back of a his cab.

Addison Lee driver Iain Coombes picked up Ayse Sabuncu, 37, and her fiance, Matthew Scutt, 32, the Wandsworth area of south London to take them to hospital for the birth of their first child.

As they passed over Chelsea Bridge on the way to London's Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, Ms Sabuncu realised the baby wouldn't wait much longer.

Mr Coombes managed to get the couple to the hospital, but the baby popped out moments after he pulled up outside the building.

The 42-year-old former City consultant turned midwife to help with the delivery, while Mr Scutt ran inside to get medical assistance.

By the time the doctors came out to help, baby Emre Arthur Scutt had already arrived - a week early and weighing 6lb 7oz.

Mr Coombes, from Sidcup, south-east London, said: "I've had many experiences as an Addison Lee driver, but nothing like this. I'm just glad everything went OK."
