The Pill

Scientists have found that being prescribed the Pill could benefit thousands of women who are plagued by period pain.

Experts in Sweden said they have "convincing evidence" about the benefits of the combined oral contraceptive pill after a major study.

Three groups of women who were 19 in 1981, 1991 and 2001 were questioned about their symptoms during menstruation as well as their use of contraceptives.

They found that the pain reduces as women get older but the Pill has an even greater effect in relieving symptoms.

Lead researcher Dr Ingela Lindh, from Gothenburg University, said the use of pain scales showed the extent of the relief provided.

One in three women suffered a significant drop, which Dr Lindh said "meant they suffered less pain, improved their working ability and there was a decrease in the need for analgesics".
