New parents keen to put their family on a firm financial footing for 2010 may want to heed the advice of Directgov.
The UK government advisory service suggests that the new year is an ideal opportunity for Britons to address their finances, whether they are interested in learning more about borrowing or increasing their savings.
More ambitious new parents who are considering their baby's first life-changing experiences may want to look beyond their finances and spend some of their savings on a memorable holiday or activity for the new year.
Directgov adds that "now's the time" to plan a dream trip - and to find out about the details such as baggage restrictions and cultural differences with certain destinations.
For those staying at home, swimming lessons are also recommended, with free access to many pools for children under the age of 16.
New parents who qualify for the Healthy Start initiative may also be able to claim free fruit and vegetables, infant formula and milk thanks to the government scheme.
