Lower energy bills 'a motivation for customers'

The chance to make their energy bills lower is the biggest incentive for people to reduce their carbon emissions.

Parents-to-be saving for the arrival of a new baby could find that just making small changes to the way they consume energy could help them lower the amount they spend on power.

Head of knowledge services at the Energy Saving Trust Dr Paula Owen said that these could include updating an old boiler, getting loft insulation or using smart meters, which help people track how much energy certain items use.

According to figures from the trust, more than 75 per cent of consumers say that saving money is their biggest motivation for lowering their carbon emissions.

Taking small steps to lower their emissions could be wise for families saving for the extra cost of having a baby, as chief executive of Ofgem Alistair Buchanan said that over the next decade, energy bills in the UK could rise by as much as 20 per cent.
