Maternity clothes to impress

You may not feel much like traipsing around the shops, but having a special occasion to look forward to (and shop for) is a sure way to give yourself a bit of a boost, plus getting glammed up in a new buy will help give you extra confidence on the day.

Here are a few things to think about when shopping for formalwear:

  1. What are your new sexy bits? Men are attracted to many parts of the female form us women usually ignore. Shoulders, wrists, ankles, toes, take a fresh look at yourself (or ask the other half) and then choose a dress that accentuates these areas.
  2. Will you feel comfortable? Nothing will put a dampener on the event like battling with an ill-fitting outfit. Stretchy fabrics can feel comfy and sexy.
  3. Will it fit on the day? If you are buying something to wear in a few weeks time remember your bump could expand suddenly so a dress with room for growth is best
  4. Will it keep you cool? Carrying all that extra weight means you are likely to overheat quicker than usual so long sleeves or heavy fabrics may turn out to be a bad idea.

Pregnancy make-up tips

You may find your skin has changed during pregnancy, it could become more sensitive to cosmetics or may become dry or more prone to spots.

Everyone is different so there are no hard and fast rules about what products are better for pregnant women than others. But being aware of the changes taking place and adapting your beauty regime to accommodate them will help you feel confident.

Book a consultation

Most cosmetics shops and department stores now offer free personal consultations where you will be given advice about what make up and beauty products are best for your skin type, colouring or style.

Don’t feel pressured into buying the products they recommend and they needn’t cost the earth if you do, Boots and Body Shop offer the service as well as the high end brands.

Do ask lots of questions. Even if you don’t end up buying from your consultant, they should still be able to give you useful information about the type of products you should be looking for.

Have a trial run Whether you’ve invested in the latest shades or you’re sticking with the tried and tested, do have a practice run of putting all your make up on a day or two before and leave it on for a few hours. If your skin has become more sensitive you will at least find out in advance if you will have any unsightly or annoying reactions to your make-up. It will also save time on the day if you already know exactly what you’re doing and you won’t have any ghastly experimental make-up disasters!

Choosing the right underwear

As your body changes its important you buy yourself new underwear to fit. And if you’re dressing for a special occasion it’s even more important to make sure you’re getting the support you need as well as the straps in the right places.

You won’t want to squeeze yourself into those restrictive control pants you wore before you were pregnant, but there are still things you can do to maximize your shapely silhouette.

  • If you haven’t done so already, get measured for a maternity bra and indulge yourself in something you can wear on your night out and beyond. You’ll feel sexier, more comfortable and those fabulous mum-to-be boobs will be totally supported.
  • Don’t skimp on knickers – there’s a fabulous choice out there designed for a comfortable fit for your mum tum and bum. You could go all out and invest in Spanx Mama maternity tights for cradling your bump and smoothing those curves.
  • Take your dress with you when you shop for underwear to ensure your new bra straps don’t show and you don’t end up with a dreaded VPL.
  • If you can’t find what you’re looking for or you’re not sure what’s available ask for help. There are now maternity products on the market all the time and you’re local shop assistant is the best person to fill you in.

Currently searching for a dress for my wedding in August in any colour except white. Glad to see the tips posted by you ladies :-)
Websites for maternity occasionwear: www.tiffanyrose.com www.isabellaoliver.com www.seraphine.com www.mummyandlittleme.co.uk www.cravematernity.co.uk www.picchumaternity.com Tiffany Rose are the most expensive, with dresses costing between £100-£300, but have some stunning designs which are said to be easily altered to wear post-bump. Their dresses are a favourite among pregnant celebrities. They go up to a size 18 unlike many of the others which seem to stop at a 14 or a 16 as if only smaller women have babies! Picchu go up to a size 20 (the website says their sizes are generous) and offer dresses between £65-£200. I'm 20 weeks pregnant (due in October) and have decided that for a wedding in July I will feel more comfortable in a dedicated maternity dress. I don't know too much about the other makes, but the Tiffany Rose dresses (where I've ordered mine from) have built-in hidden stretch panels to adapt to your changing shape and I'm hoping that will mean they're more comfy too.
I found this is an amazing forum for we expectant mothers here, here full of cozy atmosphere, it is really relax and happy to join the talking here. Now I deeply have the feeling that it is so lucky to be a lady, we could own our babies and talk to them everyday when we are in our pregnant period. But some ladies will worry about their body shapes and wonder what to wear outside, as a fashionista, I like dress beautifully everyday though I have the "big" belly. I just like hunting my beloved items online, what a surprise, I found my "gem" on www.hervelegerdresses-sale.com, you may can't imagine that we pregnants could wear dresses, but that it is real, I see many pregnant ones placed orders there and gave the good reviews, I purchased one and when I tryed it on, I can't believe pregnant woman can be so sexy and charming. there are so many kinds of dresses, original, stylish, elegant but discounted, Herve Leger bandage, Herve Leger skirts, Herve Leger strap, Herve Leger strapless, you could look for whatever you like. This is really an amazing website, so I would like to share with you everyone here, if you are a lady like following the fashion trend like me, you are worth to be there and have a look. Hope this information will benefit you here.
www.asos.co.uk have a good maternity range! and always have sale items too!

I am 20 weeks pregnant and showed quite early on...i still dress up to go out a lot and ive found that buying the bodysculpt shorts in a much bigger size (i'm a size 12 but buy 18-20) trim in all the lumps on my thighs and bottom and give my bump a lovely round shape without squashing it. they're only around £6 from asda.
Hey i have my sister in laws wedding in august but have been stressing for months for something to wear! My best tips are if you can try maxi dresses( im supposed to look good in them as a pear shape but look terrible!!) Denise Van Outen has brough a really reasonable range of lovely maternity dresses and clothes from £25- £40. Next have a few nice maternity dresses and new look has a brill range of maternity clothes for any occasion you go too...hope it saves you some time! good luck!!
Hi im 20 weeks preg with my 1st, I have 2 weddings to go too one in July and one end of Aug. I have huge issues with my now enourmous boobs, before preg I was a F cup now god only knows! If anyone can suggest a really nice dress I could get which will suit all my bumps pleeeease do or even a really good well supporting maternity bra! help!
Hi, Iam 20 weeks pregnant now and have the same problem. I was an E cup and now I am a G! Bravissimo is the best place to go for Bra's, they measure you better than anywhere else I have been and have a good range. I actually brought one of their wrap dresses for a wedding (not maternity) and it was so flattering on the boobs hardly anyone noticed by bump! Hope this helps
Hi I have a wedding on 23rd July. I am due October so am not sure how big I will be then?? This is my 1st. Any suggestions on maxi dresses - is it better to stick with maternity dresses rather than high street? Any help and names of high street stores would be much appreciated. Thank you
Hello. I have just bought an outfit for a numerous weddings we have this year. I am due 28th Sept. I really didnt want a maternity dress so looked around quite a bit. In the end I went for a dress from a designer called Tibi (dont know how much you want to spend?). I spent just over £300 so v pricey but I feel great and I will be able to wear it post baby. It has clever button so you can let it out as you get bigger. I ended up buying it from Harrods as they had the best selection. DVF good for wrap dresses. Otherwise people recommended Isabella Oliver and places like that for maternity wear. Good luck!
I have a problem that is just playing on my mind...I'm currently 20 weeks pregnant with my second child. (my daughter is 3) My due date is Sept 3rd and I have a very glamorous wedding to attend on Oct 2nd. I dont know what to wear, considering i know i will still be carrying 'baby' weight and dont know when to buy something. Should i wait and risk a last minute buy when the baby is born? Buy now and hope it will fit? should i buy maternity or 'normal' clothes? Oh I dont know. It is my sister in laws wedding (she is a model - oh I know, no pressure!) and it will be filled with glamorous people. My husband is going to be giving her away so will be seated on the top table and i will be left with the two children so it needs to be practical too! Oh help!
Hi donnamummy74 - I didn't want to leave you with no replies. I'm due 1st Sept!! I don't know about you but my body shape and size has changed so dramatically already so I have no idea how I will be after Junior arrives!! Maybe a bit nearer the time you could shop as you'll have abetter idea of how much you've grown overall and maybe look at a wrap dress - you can get some really pretty ones and they can quite easily be adjusted to your new and changing after baby shape. Comfy too!
