How to cope with morning sickness

About 70% of mothers suffer from pregnancy sickness and most babies are absolutely fine. It’s horrible feeling sick, but try these tips to help you cope:

  • Hunger can make it worse – nibbling small amounts of food often can make you feel better, and resting before you eat may help keep food down.
  • If cooking makes you feel sick, try eating salads or fruit for a while. If you cannot face food, stick to nutritious liquids. As long as you’re keeping fluids down you’re probably ok – your body has stores of most essential nutrients to draw on.
  • Eat a plain biscuit or piece of toast before you get out of bed, and get up slowly.
  • Ginger helps some women; try ginger biscuits, tea or cake.
  • Sucking peppermints, or eating peppermint flavoured chocolate or drinking peppermint tea may help.
  • Try acupressure bands (first developed to help with seasickness). You can find them at chemists and health food shops.

Hyperemesis gravidarum
This is an unusual form of pregnancy sickness which can cause dehydration as a result of excessive vomiting. See your doctor or midwife if you are being sick several times a day for more than three days.

But I suppose it will be all worth it in the end!

Banish Morning Sickness

I went for a hypnotherapy session, having spent 3 days feeling awful with morning sickness. The very next morning - no sickness and no sickness since (its been over a week since i had it). I am now 9 weeks pregnant with several other aches and pains but at least I can get on with my day. Look into it, it was the best £75 I have spent. :)

All day "morning" sickness

This is my 2nd pregnancy, I thought it was bad the first time but its even worse this time. I've tried everything with ginger....it helps, but I can only have whatever helps for a few days at a time before I have to find something else. I agree low blood sugar contributes to the nausea but I've gone off sweets- and I usually have a sweet tooth!!! I recently spent the weekend in the hospital to get rehydrated, and got some miracle anti-sickness tablets that seems to have done the trick!! I think the main thing is to have little and often... but its hard especially when you have to work and look after a family too. I really can sympatize with anyone that has rough time with pregnancy. Just keep trying and hopefully it will be over soon. Fruits have been great too, and Ritz biscuits- a friend recommended this to me- and its better than dry crackers !!!

what works for me

The ginger biscuits are good but I have wicked heartburn from non-ulcer dyspepsia and have come off all my prescription medications to keep the acid at bay. So the sweetness of the ginger biscuits sometimes just fires up the heartburn making it worse. I keep a packet of "nice" biscuits in my drawer as they are plain but tasty and are handy for that first morning snack in bed before getting up - which disturbingly works very well. Pear drops are great as are Tic-Tacs too but again, easy on the amount, too much sugar gives you heartburn too never mind the excess weight you might gain from all the sweet snacks. I totally love the Cereal idea, hadn't thought of that. I have baked crisps (not fried) which are good too or little petit filous yoghurts just to keep something in my stomach. Dried apricots or sliced apple too. Again I'm limited to what doesn't flare up my heartburn too much. Drinking lots of weak diluted juice seems to help too, yeah yeah, pee lots but helps make me feel better and not so tired either.

Feeling awful pretty much

Feeling awful pretty much night and day but I guess its par for the course. My tips would be: ginger nuts in bed before you get up and a bag of boiled sweets in your handbag - the boiled sweets temporarily subdue the feeling of nausea, especially good if you are travelling in to work etc.
