The expert guide to Group 0 or 0+ car seats

A Group 0 (suitable from birth to 10 kg) or 0+ (to 13 kg) car seat is ideal for your first journey home with baby from the hospital – in fact, you can’t leave the hospital without one if traveling by car.

Small, portable and cosy, they offer good protection for a tiny baby and must be used every time you drive. Some are also suitable to be placed on a pushchair to form a travel system; so when you choose your car seat, be sure you’ve looked at all the options available. See below for car seat safety information.

Remember that it is best for your baby to lie flat on her back in a cot or pushchair for as long as possible. Do not use the car seat for longer than you need to - usually not more than an hour when your baby is tiny - and if you often make long journeys by car, it is best to buy a lie-flat car seat.

There are two ways to fix a Group 0 or 0+ car seat into the car

With an Isofix base:

If the seat is available with the manufacturer’s Isofix base, it is always safer to use it with the base every time you put it in the car. Using the Isofix system means it’s much easier to ensure a safe journey every time. All you need do is click the car seat into the base.

With a seat belt:

Most first stage car seats can be put, facing the rear, in the back seat of the car using a three-point seat belt. Some cars have shorter belts than others – check to make sure your chosen seat will fit your car. Ask your retailer for advice and try before you buy.

Be sure to correctly fit it every time you make a journey, as many car seats are incorrectly fitted which could be fatal to your baby in a crash. Some come with a QR code you can scan with your smart phone, which downloads a fitting video – alternatively, keep your instruction booklet in the car.
