Adenoids are pads of lymph tissue at the back of the nose. Like the tonsils, they guard against infection. But if they become infected and swollen they can block the flow of air through the nose.
Symptoms
The child has to breathe through the mouth, snores at night and speaks with a nasal tone. Infected adenoids can also block the eustachian tube linking the ear with the nose, causing glue ear.
Medical treatment
Your doctor may prescribe nasal decongestant drops or antihistamines. If symptoms persist, adenoids may be removed surgically.
