This is a list of ailments and conditions that may affect you or your family at certain stages of life. Here you will find information such as the symptoms, and the best way to relieve the situation until a medical professional has been called.
Anaemia means that the blood is low in haemoglobin, which carries oxygen to all parts of the body. Iron deficiency anaemia is the most common in young children. This is nearly always a result of too little iron in the diet. Many babies between six and twelve months are anaemic because they don’t have enough iron in their weaning diet.
Symptoms include:
Tiredness
Pale skin
Loss of appetite
Delayed development
Behaviour problems
Recurrent chest infection
Treatment
If a blood test shows iron deficiency, your doctor may prescribe iron medicine, and recommend more iron-rich foods. ‘Follow-on’ milks for older babies contain added minerals and vitamins.
! Never give iron medicine unless your doctor prescribes it – too much can be toxic.
