Bronchitis
Bronchitis is infection of the larger air passages (bronchi).

Symptoms

  • a cold
  • fever
  • cough, which may be worse at night
  • wheezing
  • bringing up phlegm
Medical treatment
Your doctor may prescribe a drug to ease wheezing. Antibiotics are not usually given, as infection is often is due to a virus, which antibiotics cannot treat. Infant paracetamol in the correct dose for the child’s age may help to reduce his temperature.

What you can do to help

  • keep your child warm but don’t overheat him
  • give him plenty to drink
  • to help bring up phlegm, lay your child over your knees with his head down, and pat his back vigorously
Often, a child who has frequent attacks of bronchitis is actually suffering from asthma. Ask your doctor if you are worried about this.
