This is a list of ailments and conditions that may affect you or your family at certain stages of life. Here you will find information such as the symptoms, and the best way to relieve the situation until a medical professional has been called.
Colic involving spasms of abdominal pain is common in infants during the first three months. The cause is thought to be bubbles of gas trapped temporarily in the intestines. Evening colic rarely goes on longer than three months but, while it lasts, it is very distressing for parents and baby. In the older child, colic may be due to intestinal gas or an infection.
Symptoms include:
High, shrill crying, sometimes for several hours
Knees drawn up
Tight, stretched tummy
Medical treatment
Even if you think the problem is colic, your doctor needs to check that there is not another cause for the pain.
How you can help:
Gently rock or bounce your baby
Lay your baby face downwards on your knee
Try giving infant colic drops or small amounts of camomile tea
