This is a list of ailments and conditions that may affect you or your family at certain stages of life. Here you will find information such as the symptoms, and the best way to relieve the situation until a medical professional has been called.
Conjunctivitis is inflammation of the thin, delicate membrane that covers the eyeball and forms the lining of the eyelids. It is usually caused by a virus or bacterial infection, although it may be a complication of a general infection or other illness. It may occur if the eye is irritated by grit or chemicals.
Symptoms include:
A painful red eye
Watering
Sticky pus
Medical treatment
Your doctor may prescribe antibiotic drops or ointment.
How you can help
If the eye is sticky, use cool boiled water and cotton wool to bathe gently from inner corner outwards (to avoid spreading infection)
If both eyes are sticky, use a separate piece of cotton wool for each
Wash your hands afterwards, and don’t rub your own eyes – conjunctivitis is very contagious!
