Conjunctivitis
Conjunctivitis is inflammation of the thin, delicate membrane that covers the eyeball and forms the lining of the eyelids. It is usually caused by a virus or bacterial infection, although it may be a complication of a general infection or other illness. It may occur if the eye is irritated by grit or chemicals.

Symptoms include:
  • A painful red eye
  • Watering
  • Sticky pus
Medical treatment
Your doctor may prescribe antibiotic drops or ointment.

How you can help
  • If the eye is sticky, use cool boiled water and cotton wool to bathe gently from inner corner outwards (to avoid spreading infection)
  • If both eyes are sticky, use a separate piece of cotton wool for each
  • Wash your hands afterwards, and don’t rub your own eyes – conjunctivitis is very contagious!
