Cradle cap
Cradle cap is a common condition in babies between two and six months. Dry white or yellow scales build up on the scalp to form a crusty ‘cap’.

How you can help

  • Wash your baby’s hair daily with a mild baby shampoo as soon as signs of cradle cap appear
  • If the cradle cap gets worse, soak the crusts overnight in warm olive, sunflower or baby oil
  • In the morning, wash the scalp with baby shampoo or a special shampoo for treating cradle cap
  • You may need to do this several times

Seborrhoeic dermatitis is a more severe form of cradle cap. It starts as thick yellow scales on the scalp. A brownish-red scaly rash may then spread to cheeks, eyebrows, back of the ears and the nappy area. This condition is sometimes confused with eczema. It causes little discomfort and usually clears up by the time the child is 12 months old. If necessary, your doctor may prscribe a mild hydrocortisone (steroid) cream for you to use sparingly on affected areas.
