This is a list of ailments and conditions that may affect you or your family at certain stages of life. Here you will find information such as the symptoms, and the best way to relieve the situation until a medical professional has been called.
Constipation is common in early pregnancy, caused by the relaxing effect of the hormone, progesterone, on the intestinal muscles. This helps to prevent the womb contracting too early. Later, your growing womb may put pressure on your lower bowel.
You can help to prevent constipation if you:
Eat high-fibre foods
Drink 7-8 glasses of water a day
Take regular exercise.
If these don't help, ask your doctor if you think you need a laxative. Don't add bran to your diet unless you are advised to.
