Chromosomal disorders
Chromosomes carry our genetic identity in every cell. Each person has 23 pairs of chromosomes, of which one pair are sex chromosomes. A woman has two female chromosomes (XX) and a man has one female X- chromosome and one male Y-chromosome (XY).

Sometimes chromosomes are faulty. The best known example is Down’s syndrome. Instead of having 23 pairs of chromosomes in each cell, the affected baby has an extra chromosome attached to pair number 21. The condition is also known as Trisomy 21. Too many or too few chromosomes can lead to other developmental problems and mental handicap.
