Family mediation is a way of resolving disputes during/after separation/divorce. Both parties explain their concerns and needs to each other in the presence of a qualified family mediator. The mediator is impartial and is there there help both parties find ways of solving their problems and reach an agreement acceptable to both. Family Mediation is not a counselling service nor is it a service to help couples reconcile. Of course, couples may decide to reconcile after mediation but this will be up to them. Family mediation is also increasingly being used to solve other types of family problems, such as disputes between a parent and child; disagreements over care for elderly or seriously ill relatives; grandparents contact with grandchildren; and homelessness caused by family arguments.
