Brits more committed to saving for a rainy day, survey shows

In the last year, Brits have saved £86.35 on average a month, according to the latest figures from NS&I.

Research found that regular savers are becoming increasingly committed to saving a little each month, with household setting extra money aside during the winter season.

In response to the savings trend, Dax Harkins, senior savings strategist at NS&I, said: "It is clear that people are aware of the need to save more in these uncertain times and it is encouraging that, despite additional pressures on incomes, the average value of people's total savings was £17,443."

The survey revealed that while almost three-quarters of savers said they did not have a particular savings goal, 57% of Brits were saving in case of an unexpected emergency and 46% were putting money aside for a holiday.

A new report from The Motley Fool stated that a quarter of people would choose to invest a £50,000 windfall in shares, while one in eight would opt for the cash.
