Cotton wool balls
Use these with clean water to gently clean in tender areas where you wouldn’t use wipes, such as around the eyes.
A soft, clean towel
Drying can be harmful to your baby’s skin if done too vigorously. Always dry their skin using the gentlest patting motion.
Petroleum jelly
Most babies will experience nappy rash at one time or another. Petroleum jelly can help prevent nappy rash, forming a protective layer on your baby’s skin. To find out more, read our advice on how to treat nappy rash.
Baby sun cream
Exposure to the sun’s UVA and UVB rays, even for a short time, can harm a baby’s delicate skin. Choose a sun cream formulated especially for newborns with a high (50+) sun protection factor and keep them covered as much as possible.
A soft brush
Used with a mild baby shampoo, this can help you gently remove the flakes caused by cradle cap. To find out more, read our advice on how to treat cradle cap.
Baby nail clippers or scissors
Babies are prone to all kinds of bumps, rashes and spots, which can be made worse by scratching. Keeping their nails short will be gentler on their skin and anti-scratch mittens can help at night time too.
Creams and ointments
There are many common baby skin conditions, some of which may occasionally require treatment with topical creams or ointments.
Always ask your pharmacist or health visitor for a recommendation when treating minor conditions. Most common baby skin conditions are quite harmless, but if you’re worried, consult your GP.
You can find out more by reading our advice on what products are safe to use.
A cloth bag
Because your baby goes where you do, keeping your kit handy in a non-bulky bag will give you easy skin care when you’re on the go.
Congratulations!
Caring for a baby should be a joyful experience, and a few simple preparations can help make it so.
You can put your own baby skincare essentials kit together easily and without spending a fortune by following or adapting this checklist.
