10 Tips to Relax in Pregnancy

You’ll probably have a lot on your mind during pregnancy. Coping with your symptoms and a changing lifestyle can sometimes be overwhelming.

You’ll probably have a lot on your mind during pregnancy. Coping with your symptoms and a changing lifestyle can sometimes be overwhelming. Your mental wellbeing in pregnancy is just as important as your physical health, so try to take care of your mind as well as your body.

Here are 10 tips to help you relax and look after your emotional wellbeing in pregnancy.

  1. Rest as needed: Recognise when you're tired and allow yourself the rest you need to keep your mood up
  2. Eat well: Try to have a varied diet that supports your health and your baby's growth Prioritise ‘me’ time:
  3. Dedicate a moment daily to something you enjoy, like a warm bath, soothing music or gentle bump massages
  4. Open up to a friend: Share your worries and thoughts with a trusted friend, family member or colleague to get those emotional burdens off your chest
  5. Stay active: Being active in pregnancy is safe and healthy. Include exercise in your routine, such as walking, swimming, or even simple sit-down exercises
  6. Get practical help: Ask family or friends for support with tasks like DIY, shopping or childcare
  7. Set realistic limits: Put your wellbeing first by learning to say no when necessary, be it at work, home or socially

  9. Join local groups or online pregnancy forums or groups to share experiences and get peer support 

If you're finding your mood is lower than usual, or you’re feeling more anxious during pregnancy, ask for help. Hormone changes can lead to emotional ups and downs, but feeling low or anxious long term should be addressed. Talk to your midwife or GP if these feelings continue for more than a couple of weeks.
